Marek Osinski

Marek Osinski
University of New Mexico USA

Marek Osinski is a Gardner-Zemke Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Physics and Astronomy, and Computer Science at the University of New Mexico (UNM). He received his M.Sc. degree in Physics from the University of Warsaw, Poland, in 1971, and his Ph.D. in Physical Sciences degree from the Institute of Physics, Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw, Poland in 1979. Prior to joining UNM in 1985, he, he was a Research Fellow at the Department of Electronics, University of Southampton, England (1980-1984) and a British Telecom Senior Associate of Research in Coherent Optical Communication at Cambridge University, England (1984-1985). In 1988 and 1989, he held the NTT Endowed Chair in Telecommunications as a Visiting Professor at the Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology, University of Tokyo, Japan. In 1997, he was a Visiting Professor at the Satellite Venture Business Laboratory, University of Tokushima, Japan.
Dr. Osinski is a Fellow of SPIE - the International Society for Optical Engineering (2002) and a Fellow of the Optical Society of America (2003). In 1992 -2003, he served as North American Editor of Progress in Quantum Electronics. Since 2012, he serves as Associate Editor of IEEE Photonics Journal.
Dr. Osinski has chaired or co-chaired 38 SPIE conferences and symposia, edited 33 SPIE Proceedings volumes, and has served on numerous conference program committees, including CLEO. He has authored or coauthored over 490 technical papers, 5 book chapters, and 8 awarded patents, and 8 pending patents.

Research stay at UC3M: DEPARTAMENT OF ELECTRONIC TECHNOLOGY

Project:

During his visit to 天美传媒, planned to occur from January 1, 2014 till June 30, 2014, Professor Marek Osinski will participate in an active research program at the Grupo de Optoelectrónica y Tecnología Láser (GOTL) headed by Professor Horacio Lamela, focusing in pulsed laser technology, sensor, and signal processing techniques in biomedical applications, aiming at development of novel optical imaging technologies. In particular, Professor Osinski will work on photoacoustic spectroscopy and imaging, relevant to the EU Project OILTEBIA (Optical Imaging and Laser TEchniques for BIomedical Applications). The photoacoustic techniques exploit the generation of sound wave in a material, following absorption of an intense laser pulse. Since the sound waves propagate much better than light in tissue, they provide a convenient tool for biomedical measurements. Professor Osinski’s research will combine photoacoustic measurements with various nanosized contrast agents, including carbon nanotubes, gold nanorods, gold nanospheres, and gadolinium nanoparticles.

Stay period: JAN 2014 - JUN 2014
